Grey Wolf A Novel In History is the fictionalized account of the first war patrol of a German Submarine in World War Two. The novel is based on the patrol of U-29 in August and September of 1939. During that patrol, U-29 would sink four ships, the last of which would greatly impact the first half of the Battle Of The Atlantic. On 17 September 1939, U-29 attacked and sank the British aircraft carrier HMS Courageous. The significance of this attack was to be far reaching. It was, after all, the airplane that would become the greatest enemy of the U-boat. After the loss of HMS Courageous, the Royal Navy recalled its Fleet Carriers for four years, thus leaving Trans-Atlantic convoys without aerial reconnaissance coverage.
